August 2026 brings amazing things to watch out high above: a rare total solar eclipse and the year's best Perseid meteor shower, happening within a day of each other. If you're excited to catch these, here's your quick guide to August skywatching 2026.

Part 1: A Rare Sunset Solar Eclipse on August 12, 2026

Solar eclipses are spectacular because they're highly visible and rarer than lunar eclipses, but this one is even more so.

How Solar Eclipses Work

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some or all of its light from the point of view of particular places on Earth.

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon completely covers the Sun's disk, which is possible because of a striking coincidence: the Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon, but also about 400 times farther away, so the two appear nearly the same size in our sky. When the Moon is slightly closer to Earth than average, it appears a bit larger and can fully block the Sun, producing a total solar eclipse; when it's farther away, it can't quite cover the whole disk, resulting in an annular "ring of fire" eclipse instead.

Solar eclipses only happen during a new moon, when the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun. But it doesn't happen every month because the Moon's orbit is tilted about 5 degrees relative to Earth's orbit around the Sun, so the three bodies usually aren't perfectly lined up.

What Makes This One More Special

This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, which alone makes it worth seeing. But it also happens at sunset for most of its path, giving viewers in northern Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the northeastern corner of Portugal a great view of the lower horizon as it transforms into its evening color. The event basically rewrites the meaning of "golden hour" for a short while.

On top of that, it happens just a day after lunar perigee, or the point in the Moon's orbit when it's closest to Earth. Because the Moon appears larger than average, it covers the Sun's disk a bit more for longer, creating a 2-minute and 18-second totality over the Atlantic between Greenland and Iceland.

When, Where, and How to Catch It

This special solar eclipse happens on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with totality beginning around 16:58 UTC. The partial eclipse ends around 19:57 UTC, following the path:

Arctic Russia -> Greenland -> Iceland -> the Atlantic -> northern Spain -> the Balearic Islands -> and a small corner of northeastern Portugal (the Tras-os-Montes region near the city of Braganca, around Montesinho Natural Park).

The solar eclipse will be partially visible in most of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, with over 90% Sun coverage in places, much of Canada, parts of the northern US, and northwestern Africa.

Wherever you're watching from, eye safety matters. Certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) are a must for every phase of the eclipse except the brief seconds of full totality, and only if you're inside the path of totality. Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, won't cut it.

If you don't have these glasses on hand, a simple pinhole projector made from two pieces of cardboard is a safe, low-cost way to watch the Sun's crescent shrink and grow without looking at it directly.

Part 2: The Perseid Meteor Shower With Peak Nights on August 12-13, 2026

When "meteor shower" is mentioned, you think of bright shooting stars streaking across the night sky, camping out under the stars, and making a wish. This August, these may just come true for you.

What Causes Meteor Showers

Meteor showers are formed when Earth passes through trails of debris left behind by comets or asteroids. Since these celestial bodies are mainly made of ice, rock, and dust, outer parts melt as they approach our Sun, forming a tail of debris that stays permanently where they are.

When Earth crosses the comet's orbital path, some of this debris enter our atmosphere, heating them and creating what we call shooting stars. But don't fret; they're granular or, at most, pebble-like in size, burning up into gas, plasma, and invisible dust miles before they reach the ground.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is an annual event named after the constellation Perseus, the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to radiate. The Perseids occur when Earth passes through the orbit of permanent debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, usually from mid-July through late August every year.

When, Where, and How to View It

Select a place away from city lights, and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark. Avoid screens (peeking at your phone will spoil the view), lie back, and take in the glory of the heavens with its streaking fireballs. Patience is key here to find the best displays that come in bursts. You'll notice glowing trails last several seconds before they disappear.

Thank the Heavens

The new moon enhances the view of the meteor shower, as the effect is essentially no moonlight to wash out fainter meteors. This is a rare alignment that should let dark-sky viewers see the best of the Perseids.

The Overlap

2026 is truly exceptional, as these two events, a total solar eclipse and the peak of a meteor shower, create a rare double spectacle on the same date.

For this year, if you happen to be in the path of totality during the August 12, 2026 eclipse, you may spot Perseid meteors during that brief window, when the sky darkens enough for stars (and the occasional meteor) to become visible in daytime.
